The scope of the damage caused by a hailstorm that battered part of Hamilton County is becoming more clear as insurance adjusters filter through incoming claims.

State Farm set up shop in the parking lot of a Home Depot on 96th Street Friday to check car damage resulting from baseball-sized hail that pelted the Fishers area.

The company, the largest provider of vehicle and homeowner insurance in Indiana, said that it had already received more than 1,500 claims involving homes and more than 2,000 involving vehicles, Call 6's Rafael Sanchez reported.

Bob Paulk had a particularly cringe-worthy experience with the hail. The storm hit about 30 minutes after workers had finished installing a brand new roof.

"Our contractor said that's the fastest a new roof that's had to be replaced that he's ever seen," he said.

Along with this roof, Paulk's vehicles also had more than $1,000 in damage from the hail.

State Farm is calling in extra manpower to handle the volume of claims.

"The more you look, the more you see it, it seems like. I was very surprised," said Rita Morgan, who had received a $2,700 check to cover the cost of repairing damage to her car. "State Farm is wonderful. They take care of the client."

State Farm recently settled with Indiana over how it handled hail damage claims from a 2006 storm that ravaged part of Indianapolis.

A class-action lawsuit involving Indiana homeowners and State Farm is still pending in federal court.

A State Farm catastrophe team will arrive on site Saturday to help the hardest-hit parts of Fishers.
