A total snowfall accumulation of 4 to 8 inches is expected across much of central Indiana by Wednesday morning.

Higher amounts are expected in the northern part of Indiana, where up to 9 inches of snow could fall.

A winter storm warning was issued for most of Indiana. Counties in the southwestern part of the state were under a winter weather advisory. Accumulations are expected to be a little lower in that area. Check Watches & Warnings

Snow began falling steadily in the Indianapolis area after midnight. A break in the accumulating snow is expected during part of the day, but more snow is forecast for Tuesday evening and overnight.

Light winds Tuesday morning are expected to get progressively stronger through the day. Wind gusts of up to 35 mph on Tuesday night and Wednesday will cause blowing and drifting of snow.

A little more snow could fall on Wednesday before the storm system leaves the area.

Temperatures will stay below normal for the rest of the week, with a few snow flurries expected on Friday.
