Wooly Worms And Weather
Kevin's Weather Blog
Perhaps a better forecast is within my peripheral vision. So, I try to keep my eyes open when I'm outside.
While out running recently, I counted 35 wooly worms in a 1-mile distance. As you know, these little furry creatures are a big part of weather folklore. Here is what others have said about using the wooly worm to forecast the upcoming winter:
We will have a bad winter IF lots of them are crawling around. (I will let you decide if 35 along a 1-mile stretch of road is a lot.)
We will have a bad winter IF they are moving unusually slow. (As compared to traffic, they were moving unusually slow.)
We will have a bad winter IF you saw them crawling before the first frost. (Uh oh! They are on the move, and we have not had the first frost. They might be trying to leave town before freezing to the pavement!)
However tempting, don't swerve out of your lane to protect nature's meteorologist. It's too dangerous. But if you happen to see me along the road, please slow down and pass with caution. Thanks!
