Wind Fanning The Flames

Kevin's Weather Blog

There is often a meteorological connection to wildfires.

Lightning is sometimes the cause of the fire. More common, wind fans the flames.

In Southern California, the Santa Ana Wind has been the main meteorological challenge to firefighters.

California residents are used to these hot, dry winds. They are common in autumn.

Clockwise circulation of air around high pressure in Nevada is bringing desert air from Arizona and Nevada toward the Pacific.

As the air moves toward the coast, it increases in temperature.

As air descends mountain slopes, it heats due to compression. Wind speed also increases as it's funneled through coastal ranges and valleys. The wind is named after the Santa Ana Canyon.
