Indian Summer?

Kevin's Weather Blog

POSTED: 5:23 a.m. EST October 30, 2003

If you want to start a meteorological argument try to define Indian summer.

There is no absolute meteorological definition. The term may have originally referred to good weather that allowed Native Americans to harvest their crops.

No matter how you define the warm weather event though, it's always welcome.

Some say you must have a hard freeze before the unusually warm period for it to be considered Indian summer.

Officially, Indianapolis has not had a hard freeze yet. We have had a freeze though. On Oct. 2, the low temperature dropped to 32 degrees in the capitol city.

This warm weather event in the middle of autumn can last from several days to a week or more. In our case, above average temperatures should last through the weekend.

Instead of a "heated" argument over the term, enjoy the heat of the next few days!
