Engineers To Examine Storm-Struck Building; 1,000 Workers Kept Out

A downtown Indianapolis skyscraper will be closed for at least a week because of damage it sustained in a storm Sunday night, a representative of the building's owner said Monday.

Some streets around the One Indiana Square skyscraper also will be closed indefinitely as a cleanup is performed and forensic engineers determine whether the building is structurally safe, 6News' Derrik Thomas reported.

Between 10 and 12 stories of windows at the 36-floor structure were shattered as the storm struck the city. Part of the building, whose primary tenant is Regions Bank, was bulging beneath the damaged floors, Indianapolis Mayor Bart Peterson said.

No serious injuries were reported.

"We had city inspectors in there last night, along with the building engineer. Many of the offices are just blown out," Peterson said. "There are no walls in them -- furniture sucked out. It's a pretty serious situation."

About 1,000 people work at the building. The building's operators said they were working on securing temporary workplaces elsewhere for some of the tenants.

Police closed some streets and sidewalks out of concern that debris could fall from the building, including: Delaware Street from Washington to Vermont Street and Pennsylvania Street from Michigan Street to Market Street. Also, there will be no eastbound travel on New York Street or Ohio Street from Meridian Street, the city said.

The damage came during a series of strong storms that damaged 49 business sites, destroyed 19 homes and damaged more than 400 homes in Indiana on Sunday, according to the state Department of Homeland Security. Those storms came two nights after a different round of storms caused extensive damage in parts of Johnson and Shelby counties.
