Heavy snow uncommon this late in year for Indiana

4 inches or more fell only twice this late

INDIANAPOLIS - If Indianapolis receives the 5- to 9-inch snowfall in the forecast, it will be a quite rare occurrence for this late in the year.

Indy often gets some accumulating snow in March, but it's not common later in the month.

Since records began being taken in 1871, there have only been two occasions after March 24 in which 4 inches or more of snow fell.

That happened on April 9, 1897, and March 24, 1912.

On March 19 and 20 in 1996, nearly a foot of snow fell at the airport, with 8 inches falling in a storm on March 11, 2000.

On March 21, 2006, 5.4 inches of snow coated Indianapolis.
