INDIANAPOLIS – Morning commuters are expected to prepare for possible wintry conditions Wednesday as temperatures begin to drop.

A wintry mix of below-freezing temperatures, rain and snow is expected to potentially impact highways.

About 60 trucks with the Indiana Department of Transportation will be ready to treat roads across east central Indiana if needed.

INDOT officials said the first snow of the season typically results in a higher rate of crashes and slide-offs.

The following tips are recommended by INDOT during wintry conditions:

Know before you go: Learn about current and forecasted weather, as well as roadway conditions before driving. Plan ahead. INDOT offers many resources at winter.indot.in.gov to help drivers be prepared.

Reduce speeds: Nobody should be driving summer interstate speeds in winter weather. Ice is possible any time temperatures are below freezing. Be cautious even when temperatures are shown to be near 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

Keep a safe distance: Make sure your vehicle is following a safe distance to stop. Do not tailgate, especially around snow plows.

Pay attention: Avoid all distractions and focus only on the task of driving safely. Be defensive and alert for those who are not driving safely.
