INDIANAPOLIS -- June is known for being a warm month. But five years ago Wednesday, Indianapolis felt the warmest June day in the history of the city.

On June 28, 2012, the high reached 104 degrees, the highest Indy has seen in June.

The heat and dry weather affected the water level in many Indiana communities. In Bargersville, Indiana, there was four feet of water in a water tower that usually stored about 30 feet. If a building caught fire, the firefighters would only have about five minutes of water to fight it.

Around Indianapolis, people trying to stay cool popped open fire hydrants around the city. This caused a drop in water pressure, which is another potential problem for firefighters. To counter that, the water company boosted the pressure, which could lead to broken water mains.

Many communities instituted bans on shooting off fireworks during the heat wave.

While temperatures were high, Meals on Wheels volunteers spent extra time with the elderly people they care for, making sure they were able to cool off.

"Some of them don't have even fans," Spokesperson Barbara Renshaw said. "It's our responsibility to check on them."

At the Indianapolis Zoo, caretakers made sure each animal was cool enough to make it through the heat wave. Sela the tiger got a meat popsicle.

The highest temperature Indianapolis has ever seen is 106 degrees. The last time that happened was July 14, 1936.
