Forecast: Colder temps; snow headed our way this weekend

INDIANAPOLIS - We are in StormTeam 6 ALERT mode for Sunday.

Most of the snow showers should move out by mid-morning today and the rest of the day will be mostly cloudy, cold and breezy with a high temperature of 29 degrees.

The focus continues to be on the weekend. Saturday will be the better day with partly cloudy skies and high temperatures in the upper 30s.

Late Saturday the clouds will increase and snow will develop. Once the snow starts it will be with us throughout the entire day on Sunday before wrapping up late Sunday evening.

ALERT for Sunday snow

Models have come into much better agreement over the past 24 hours and most place the low pressure area near Cincinnati. This is a very favorable snow track for us. One thing we will have to watch is if that low sneaks a bit more to the north it may introduce some mixed precipitation in southern counties.

Most of us will see all snow with 3 to 6 inches of accumulation. I would not be surprised if there is a band of snow that sets up somewhere from Indy north that could produce even higher totals.

One thing to note, the snow that we have seen so far this year has been a light and fluffy snow. This will be a much wetter and heavier snow, because we will be bringing in moisture from the Pacific and Gulf of Mexico.

Behind this storm system it gets very cold with highs in the teens and lows in the single digits.
