Our big temperature drop may have you thinking it's already winter.

While the season isn't here just yet - we're looking into what the season will bring.

The climate prediction center released the winter outlook and it just might be a busy season across Indiana. Above average precipitation is forecast across Indiana and the Ohio valley.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis are calling for more snowfall than last year. We picked up less than 10 inches all last winter. We should be closer to our 26-inch average this season.

The NWS says they aren't ruling out ice and even severe weather this winter. That's because the outlook also calls for near to above average temperatures.

While this winter is expected to be a busy one - meteorologist Mike Ryan with the National Weather Service in Indianapolis says it may take a while before the season really ramps up.

“I do think though, January and February are likely to be active and for those looking for an early spring preview, probably not going to get it this year," Ryan said.

Ryan said he wouldn't be surprised if we saw cooler than normal conditions and wintry weather to persist into March.
