Bypass around W. Lafayette opens before ND game

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The U.S. 231 bypass around West Lafayette that Purdue University President Mitch Daniels says will make campus safer and more vibrant has opened on the eve of thousands of fans arriving in town to see Notre Dame play the Boilermakers in football.

The Journal & Courier reports the road opened Friday after a ribbon cutting earlier that marked the end to decades of planning and two years of construction.

The four-lane limited access road cost $46 million to build and was financed through Major Moves, the project Daniels championed as governor to lease the Indiana Toll Road for $3.8 billion and use the proceeds for road projects across the state.

Mayor John Dennis says the bypass allow truck traffic to move outside city limits and will bring economic development.
