CARMEL, Ind. - A new feature at Clay Terrace will let patrons with electric cars charge while they shop.
The “plug-in ecosystem” for cars is a solar-powered energy storage station and electric vehicle charging station.
Energy Systems Network partnered with several companies to design this car charging station. It’s the first of its kind in the world.
“(It can) take solar energy, put it into batteries and use that power, that solar power to actually charge electric vehicles,” explained Paul Mitchell, the president and CEO of Energy Systems Network.
The station should work with every electric vehicle model and, for now, charging a car is free.
Its spot at the mall is also another first.
“This is the first time such an aspect has been put in a mall where consumers can learn about it, the technology, while they are there,” Mitchell said.
"We hope it really creates some awareness of the electric vehicle charging station world and energy services," added Alex Gagnier, the director of mall marketing at Clay Terrace.
The charging station is in the parking lot of Clay Terrace behind Whole Foods.
