IMPD chase through city's east side tops 100 mph ending in Hancock County crash

Chase may be linked to robbery

INDIANAPOLIS - Three suspects were taken into custody after leading police on a high-speed chase on the city's east side Tuesday afternoon.

Around 2 p.m., Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were sent to a video game store in the 10000 block of East Washington Street on reports of a robbery in progress.

A witness told IMPD that a silver SUV was spotted leaving the store before entering an eastbound ramp of Interstate 70. Police chased the SUV though Marion County into Hancock County with speeds nearing 100 mph.

The SUV stopped near I-70 and Post Road where a suspect jumped out and ran away. Police chased the suspect on foot and fired a shot at the suspect. Police eventually caught up with the suspect who was taken into custody.

Meanwhile, the suspect driving the SUV continued along I-70. The driver lost control of the SUV and the vehicle rolled several times on the exit ramp near I-70 and State Road 9.

"They deployed stop sticks to no avail. He swerved to miss the stop sticks and then wrecked his vehicle at this intersection," IMPD Officer Christopher Wilburn said.

The driver and a passenger were injured in the crash. Both were taken to Eskenazi Health with non-life-threatening injuries. Police also found what they believed were two game consoles taken during the robbery.

Police were trying to determine if the suspects involved in the chase were the same men who were involved in the robbery of a discount tobacco store earlier in the day.

Cumberland Police Department Officer Michael Crooke helped to chase the suspects. The camera in his squad car captured the events of the chase.

"There were a lot of cars. We got into heavy traffic especially in some construction on I-70 and when we got into heavy traffic, it could have gone way worse. I'm glad no one was injured," Crooke said.

IMPD investigators identified the three suspects on Wednesday: Amparis Thomas, 20; Joshua Elliott, 23; and Vangelo Jenkins, 29. All three were arrested on preliminary charges of robbery and resisting law enforcement.
