Man's death at apartment on city's west side marks 7th homicide in 4 days

James Vester, 32, shot in apparent robbery at apt.

INDIANAPOLIS - A 32-year old man was shot and killed on the city's west side Wednesday afternoon, marking the city’s seventh homicide in only four days.

The incident happened at the Wyckford Commons Apartments near Girls School Road and West 10th Street around 4 p.m., officials with the Wayne Township Fire Department said.

Police said the man, identified as James Vester, of Lizton, was found outside suffering from a gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said two suspects fled through the apartment complex on foot.

Detectives said they believed robbery was the motive, but they were still investigating.

Vester did not live at the apartment complex, but sources confirmed to RTV6 the victim went to the complex to buy an iPad in what may have been a robbery set-up.

Members of the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition are trying to help stop the bloodshed. They reach out to people in the city's five most violent zip codes.

"We run into a lot out here on the streets. Sometimes we run into people who have street conflicts and what we do is we help mediate those conflicts. We have broken up fights and arguments," Rev. Charles Harrison said.

Leaders said since they have started weekly street patrols, homicides have dropped to less than one a week in the targeted areas. However, Harrison said they got a late start.

"This year we didn't even get the crime prevention money on the street until October, so we went almost 10 months without any of this money being on the streets where we could have been of assistance to IMPD," Harrison said.

Officials said more outreach is needed throughout other parts of the city, including the area of the city’s latest homicide.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
