INDIANAPOLIS - Prosecutors said they need more time to file formal charges against an uncle and niece accused in a series of purse snatchings on the city’s east side.
Monday afternoon, police arrested Mark Jones, 47, and Lindsey Jones, 27, both of Indianapolis, on preliminary charges of theft and robbery. Officers with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said they got a substantial lead when someone called in a tip to report their vehicle.
Investigators said in at least one holdup, the two battered and hurt one of the victims. The beating sent the victim to the hospital.
JoAnn Green, 76, said Wednesday that she is just glad the pair is off the street. She said she was ripped off in the driveway of her own home and knocked to the ground.
Court documents said the pair operated out of a Knights Inn hotel at 21st Street and Shadeland Avenue. They were apparently looking for victims and followed Green home from a Kroger parking lot at 10th Street and Shadeland Avenue.
"They are barely above child molesters, on the criminal scale. This has been a terrible, terrible ordeal for me," Green said.
At least three other women were also victims.
An 84-year-old woman was returning home from the area of 16th Street and Emerson Avenue on April 15. Her purse was grabbed when she pulled into her garage, officials said.
The next day, an 89-year-old woman had her purse snatched while she was in the drive-thru lane at a Steak ‘n Shake in the 7900 block of East Washington Street, police said.
On April 28, the pair allegedly stole the purse of an 87-year-old woman as she left an MCL Cafeteria restaurant in the 6000 block of East 10th Street, documents said.
Police hope that since the Joneses are in custody that the attacks will end. Green, who is deaf, said she is defiant.
"I have been alone and taken care of myself for a long time. I was never afraid. I'm not afraid now. I refuse to let people like that take anymore away from my life that my disabilities have already taken," Green said.
Formal charges are expected to be filed in court Thursday morning. The suspects are being held on $300,000 bond.
