INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Department of Transportation said northbound Interstate 65 and eastbound Interstate 70 have reopened to traffic.

Crews were still working to repair a damaged overpass at the south split of northbound Interstate 65 and eastbound Interstate 70 on Sunday.

Fabricators were cutting steal, plating and splicing it to the overpass beam as a reinforcement measure Sunday afternoon.

INDOT said safety is the top priority, but they really hope the work will be done before Monday morning.

“Of course the objective, if possible, was always to get the interstate open to traffic as quickly as possible. At this point, we are optimistic that we will be able to get those repairs implemented before the Monday morning commute,” said Nathan Riggs of INDOT.

If the repairs weren't complete by Monday morning, drivers would have been in for reroutes and possible delays getting to work.

Those traveling on I-65 heading into downtown would have been diverted at the south split.

The traffic would go on I-70 instead.

Those traveling east on I-70 would be forced to head south on I-65.

Orange arrows and construction barrels sat in place of familiar green signs guiding the way along the interstate.

Truck driver Steve Thompson, of Minnesota, was in town Saturday night and heard about Friday’s crash where an oversized load crashed into an I-65 overpass.

He said the crash is a reminder to him to stay vigilant.

“I’m watching the signs all the time because I don’t want what happened Friday night to happen to me,” Thompson said.

State police cited the driver of the semi that caused the damage for having an oversized load.
