INDIANAPOLIS - The Mavris Arts and Events Center held the only official Oscar screening event in Indianapolis Sunday night.
The event was a fundraiser for the United Way of Central Indiana and it brought in a crowd of 475 people.
“We did the vintage circus theme. We’re kind of playing off the ‘Water for Elephants’ movie and the book that was out a couple of years ago, so we went off that and it just became a big top theme,” said event organizer Jessica Thomas.
The fundraiser generated $65,000 in donations last year.
“We’re looking at a total of $70,000 as our goal we’re hoping for,” Thomas said of this year's event.
United Way plans to use the money raised at the event to help fund their educational priorities in Marion County.
“This is really important to raise the awareness with what we’re doing with tutoring programs and early childhood,” Thomas said.
