Injured IMPD Officer Santos Cortez gets rescued German Shepherd

Cortez hit by drunken driver, police say

GREENWOOD, Ind. - An Indianapolis police officer injured in the line of duty will get a new four-legged friend to keep him company during his recovery.

Officer Santos Cortez was struck by a drunken driver in June, police said, and has been at a rehabilitation hospital since then.

Cortez, a father of four and longtime animal lover who said he has always wanted a German Shepherd, was presented with his new pet Monday by the Officer David Moore Foundation and German Shepherd Rescue Indy.

Maedchen, a rescue from Gary, is a mild-mannered dog who even slept through part of the ceremony.

"I cannot think of a more deserving candidate than Santos Cortez and his family to receive a rescued German Shepherd," said Amber Marks, founder and president of German Shepherd Rescue. "David Moore, I pray was in the room yesterday looking at a wonderful officer."

Cortez will undergo another surgery Tuesday. He is expected to be home with his family and new best friend by Christmas.
