INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana State Department of Health reported Sunday that 61 more people have died from COVID-19, while more than 12,000 people have tested positive.

According to the state health department, a total of 630 people have died from the coronavirus and 12,097 people people have been diagnosed, an increase of 505 since Sunday. ISDH said deaths are reported based on when data is received by the department and occurred over multiple days.

The deaths reported Tuesday happened between April 7 and April 20, according to ISDH.

The latest numbers show Marion County with 4,176 positive cases and 206 deaths.

A total of 67,264 people have been tested in Indiana, according to the state health department.

"The new cases and new tests reported today are lower than expected due to a technology issue and should not be interpreted as a decline in new infections. The additional positive cases not included in today’s report will be captured in the coming days and reflected appropriately," ISDH said in their press release Tuesday.

Human coronaviruses most commonly spread from an infected person to others through: Respiratory droplets released into the air by coughing and sneezing; close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands; touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes before washing your hands; rarely, fecal contamination.

The best way to protect yourself from any respiratory illness, including the flu, is to: Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap & water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoid close contact (within six feet) with people who are sick. Stay home when you are sick. Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
