BLOOMINGTON — An Indiana University student who studied abroad in Italy has tested positive for the coronavirus.

IU shared the information on its coronavirus page Sunday night. The school said the student, who was studying in Italy, returned home to St. Louis last week.

No other details about the student's condition or how they may have contracted the virus have been released.

A second IU student, who has not been on campus this semester, also tested positive for the coronavirus last week.

In a statement released Sunday night, IU's Office of Overseas Study worked to make sure all students studying in the Lombardy region of northern Italy leave the region before travel restrictions went into place.

Given the recently announced decree of the Italian Government restricting travel in and out of the Lombardy region in northern Italy, the Office of Overseas Study is coordinating efforts with programs and students to ensure that any IU students still in that area depart the region before the restrictions go into place. They will be able to continue their studies via on-line course work.

The Office of Overseas Study is aware that two IU spring semester study abroad students have tested positive for coronavirus COVID-19 and are recovering away from their program sites. We are working with the IU Public Safety office and our partner organizations to support the impacted students and to provide information and guidance to other program participants who were at the original locations.

Indiana University's current policy is that anyone traveling from a country with a CDC level 2 or 3 travel alert will be required to self-quarantine off-campus for 14 days before they are allowed to return to campus.

Those countries currently include:

  • China
  • Iran
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • South Korea
