NOBLESVILLE — Thirty years ago this week, Hoosiers got their first look at a newly constructed venue that would go on to become one of the most frequented entertainment hot spots in the state; Deer Creek Music Center.

Channel 6 reporter Debra Darnell visited Deer Creek, now known as Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center, on April 28, 1989.

Sunshine Promotions, the company behind the music center, promised a wide range of acts.

“As we’ve said from the beginning, we’re going to have something for everybody,” said a Sunshine Promotions spokesperson.

Neighbors were skeptical.

The venue faced opposition from the beginning, mainly from residents who lived near the property on 146th Street. Darnell spoke with neighbors just weeks before the music center was set to open.

“I’m worried about what will go on on the hillsides, I’m afraid it will be another Woodstock and just be a disgrace or be something that people cannot take their kids to,” said one neighbor.

Singer Sandi Patty was the artist to perform at Deer Creek on May 20, 1989.
