INDIANAPOLIS -- There will soon be a new USS Indiana.
The Virginia-class attack submarine, marked SSN-789, was delivered to the US Navy this week and is scheduled to commission in September 2018.
When it goes into service, it will be the fourth ship named after Indiana and the first since World War II.
The first USS Indiana was a battleship. It saw action during the Spanish-American War and participated in both the blockade and battle of Santiago de Cuba, according to the U.S. Navy. The second started construction in the early 1920s but was quickly sold for scrapping.
The third USS Indiana was a battleship completed in 1942. It saw action in the Pacific front of World War II, earning nine battle stars. It was decommissioned in 1947 and sold for scrapping in 1963.
The Virginia-class submarines, like the future USS Indiana, have two large-diameter payload tubes, each capable of firing six Tomahawk cruise missiles, according to a release from the Navy.
"Indiana's delivery marks the culmination of millions of man-hours of work by thousands of people across this country to bring the world's foremost undersea asset to the fleet," said Capt. Christopher Hanson, Virginia class program manager. "It is a proud day for every person who had a hand in the submarine's construction."
The USS Indiana began construction in 2012.
