MONTGOMERY, Ind. -- Next year will mark the 48th anniversary of the Montgomery Turkey Trot. This is a Thanksgiving race, but with turkeys. Seriously.

The tradition of bird racing dates back to 1972 when a turkey known as "Firebird" won the inaugural trot, despite the death of one turkey during the race.

In 1973, the race was held at the Montgomery Recreation Park Turkey Racing and Tractor Pulling track.

"The five finalists in this year's race were a veritable who's who of turkey trotting," Channel 6 reporter Reid Duffy.

Experience the action of these galloping gobblers as you head back to 1973 with Duffy in this RTV6 throwback you have to watch to believe.
