The Jefferson Awards for Public Service looks for local unsung heroes who make the world a better place through volunteering and community service. Known as the “Nobel Prize for Public Se rvice,” the awards recognize ordinary people who do extraordinary things. RTV6 presents the Jefferson Awards to local volunteers and paid professionals, who go well beyond their expected duties and positively impact our communities.

INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman has spent years making a difference for other women across the state who are battling breast cancer.

Nancy Shepard founded and built the “IWIN Foundation” an organization that comes into the lives of women at their most vulnerable time and helps them with whatever they need.

“Our mission is to essentially try to take away some of those physical, financial and emotional issues that you’re going through that keep you from staying in the game,” said Nancy. “Going to treatment. You’d rather give up. It’s just too much.”

Nancy no longer runs IWIN, but she remains heavily involved with the organization she started – two decades ago – and checks in with the staff and clients each day.

Since October is designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, it seems only fitting that Nancy would be this month’s Jefferson Award recipient.
