1 Seriously Hurt In Rolls-Royce Explosion

Small Fire Quickly Contained

A man was seriously injured in an explosion and small fire at the Rolls-Royce facility on Indianapolis' southwest side early Monday morning.

The incident happened at about 7:25 a.m. in the 2000 block of South Tibbs Avenue.

The fire was quickly contained, but one employee was seriously burned. The victim was able to walk to an ambulance and was taken to Wishard Memorial Hospital.

Wayne Township fire officials said a furnace used to heat and strengthen metal misfired, causing the explosion when one end blew out.

"The plant remains open, as the affected area accounts for a very small portion of the facility," said Wayne Township fire Capt. Courtney Rice. "The cause of the explosion is being investigated."

The victim's injuries are not life-threatening, Rice said.

The Indiana Occupational Safety and Health Administration was called to investigate.
