INDIANAPOLIS – Swimming pools are packed this time of year as people look to cool off, but there are some things you can do to ensure your water is safe before jumping in.

Swimming pools can be a breeding ground for stomach virus and germs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The aquatics team at Indy Parks follow a strict schedule of testing their pools for chlorine and pH every hour, but neighborhood pools may not.

Health experts said swimmers can ask pool staff how often the water is tested. Water test strip kits can also be purchased online through retailers like Amazon.

“As an aquatics professional, I test water before I get in it anyway. I think it’s probably a best practice,” said Jennifer Stoneking.
