INDIANAPOLIS — A planned detour of a popular trail in Indianapolis is raising safety concerns because it would put runners, bikers and walkers right in the middle of another construction zone.

The Monon Trail is closing on Thursday from 61st Street to Northview Avenue because the bridge over Kessler Boulevard E. Drive needs repairs. The closure is expected to last until Jan. 15.

The detour will take those who would use the trail on College Avenue from 52nd Street to Broad Ripple Avenue, Indy Parks announced Friday. But that zone is right in the middle of Red Line construction.

College Avenue is already seeing construction and lane restrictions for the project. In some areas, the street leaves very little space for even the two vehicle lanes.

When Call 6 Investigates brought those concerns to Indy Parks last week, they released a statement that says College Avenue is a “suggested detour.”

“As we know customers may use our detours or have their own preferred alternative, there could be multiple suggested detours,” the statement reads.

Indy Parks went on to say there will be a “final announcement” Monday. That announcement has not come yet.

Read the full Indy Parks statement below.

We are continuing to work with IndyGo to finalize detour options and will share any additional detours with our customers (individual messages and calls will go out to user groups, elected officials, and our partners). This initial announcement serves as an advance notice of impending construction and offers a suggested alternative for residents. As we know customers may use our detours or have their own preferred alternative, there could be multiple suggested detours. We will roll out a final announcement on Monday, December 10 (four days prior to construction) along with continued outreach until the bridge reopens.
