INDIANAPOLIS — The coronavirus outbreak is in full swing, but one local organization is hoping you will remember the important 2020 census count.

Count Me INdy is fighting social distancing to help make sure every Hoosier is represented.

A lot of things right now are being delayed or canceled, but one thing that hasn't been is the census count and Count Me INdy representatives want to make sure we don't forget to respond.

Count Me INdy is a campaign working to make sure every Hoosier responds to the 2020 census. Their original plan was to host events at local libraries to encourage people without internet access to self-respond on line. But now with social distancing their plans have to change.

Callie Kennington said they are going to turn to online advertisements and putting information on self-responding in food packages. She said this pandemic is showing us how important the count is.

"We're seeing that in real time why federal funding and the allocation of that is so important for our community right for every person counted in Indianapolis and Marion county potentially is $30,000 will come into our city over the next decade," Kennington said.

She said the Census Bureau has delayed some of their operations. You can now self-respond through August and census workers won't be knocking on your door as soon as they thought, but regardless of the pandemic the numbers are still due on the presidents desk by the end of the year.

Your response is confidential for 72 years and you can self respond right now by visit 2020census.gov.
