GREENWOOD — For the Stage to Screen Catered Cabaret Theatre in Greenwood, the timing could not have been worse.

Open for less than two years, the theater on East Main Street had to shut down in March when the pandemic hit. It will not be reopening.

Managing Member Christopher Tompkins made the announcement on Facebook, calling it the "most painful and challenging correspondence I have ever had to attempt to put together."

"Over the past two years – almost to the day since establishing the company – many, many individuals have invested a significant amount of time, money, passion, creativity, sponsorship, volunteering, and support," Tompkins wrote.

Efforts were made to keep the theater afloat, but it did not work out. And the closure points to the challenges faced by the entertainment during the pandemic.

"The unfortunate reality is many businesses are faced with one of the most uncertain futures I believe most of us have experienced in our lifetimes," Tompkins wrote. "The entertainment industry – live theatres, orchestras, ballet companies, movie theaters, motion pictures, television, concerts and attractions – have been extremely impacted by this pandemic and I foresee many more impending closures forthcoming in the days, weeks and months ahead. There is no way to survive with minimal to no cash flow to just hold-on. Simply existing takes money."

About the closure, Tompkins wrote, "this personally breaks my heart."
