MUNCIE — Add Delaware County to the growing list of county fairs that are canceled.

Citing concerns over COVID-19 safety and restrictions, the fair board in Muncie decided against a fair in July, although some fair-related activities, including 4-H, could take place in some form.

Delaware County joins Bartholomew, Owen, Rush, Monroe and Hancock counties in making similar decisions with their fairs.

All six counties will not hold the traditional fair—the one with rides, cotton candy and various other attractions. But they are working on ways showcase 4-H projects, either virtually or in person.

COVID-19 restrictions and concerns are behind all the decisions, which come the week after Purdue Extension, which sets the rules for county 4-H fairs, said the fairs could be held in July if various safety measures were taken. Fair boards are finding it would be difficult to meet those regulations in the short time left to plan the fairs.
