KOKOMO — In Kokomo, where a good percentage of the population works at one of the auto plants, the news this week is encouraging.

General Motors is reopening its Electronics Components facilities this week, and Chrysler will be back at work next week in Kokomo and nearby Tipton.

The plants closed in mid-March due to COVID-19 concerns and restrictions, although GM has been busy building hospital ventilators at one building under a half-billion dollar government contract.

Fiat-Chrysler has transmission and casting plants in Kokomo and Tipton. Workers will return to a different environment, with daily temperature checks and health screenings along with mandatory face masks and safety glasses.

GM has similar safety policies in place, all in an effort to keep COVID-19 at bay.
