INDIANAPOLIS -- With school buildings closed through the end of the current semester, IPS begins its Home Learning Plan on Thursday.

The district shut down in mid-March, but the closure was followed by a two week spring break. Now it's back to the books, or in this case, laptops, pencil and paper.

Superintendent Aleesia Johnson says the IPS plan is a hybrid approach to learning for students in grades K-12.

“I am extremely proud of the work the leadership team has poured into creating a strong academic plan that not only keeps students in kindergarten through eighth-grade on track and engaged, but also ensures our high school students get the credits they need to progress and graduate on time,” said Johnson.

“We know and understand that this is a scary and uncertain time for our families and students," said the superintendent. "However, when it comes to the district’s Home Learning Plan, parents can be assured that they are not alone in this process. Teachers will provide instructions in a variety of modalities and students will have access to district-wide support staff. We are supporting our families not just academically, but socially and emotionally, as we all work through this new way of teaching and learning together.”

The Home Learning Plan includes paper/pencil packets for students in Grades K–8, and e-learning for Grades 9-12. For students who don't have computers, laptops were gathered from schools throughout the district for distribution to high school students, and those in Grades 7–8 taking credit-dependent courses.

High school coursework will be delivered to students over their computers. Students in Grades K–8 will receive monthly paper/pencil packets in the mail. Home Learning days for students will take place Tuesday through Thursday of each week. Mondays and Fridays will be utilized by teachers for planning and grading purposes.
