NEW PALESTINE — A New Palestine High School football player has tested positive for COVID-19, according to the school district.

Football players and families were notified of the positive case on Friday, Wes Anderson, Director of School and Community Relations, Community School Corporation of Southern Hancock County, said in a statement.

District administrators and the athletic department are working with the Hancock County Health Department to identify anyone who may have been within close contact with the player who tested positive, Anderson said. People who may have had close contact will quarantine for at least 14 days.

The team started optional summer practices on July 6, Anderson said. Friday's optional practice was canceled as a precaution.

The district still plans to start the school year in-person on Monday, Anderson said. Several safety protocols will be in place.
