INDIANAPOLIS — Wayne Township schools announced changes to its food distribution policy after U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams identified Indianapolis as an emerging hot spot for the coronavirus.

In a notice posted online, the Metropolitan School District of Wayne Township announced it will ask people to open their vehicle's trunk or rear gate after they enter the parking but before pulling up to the meal distribution area.

"This also helps to reassume our families that we are putting steps in to place that can allow them to continue coming on to our campuses and get those free nutritious meals," Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Butts said.

Parents should also indicate the number of meals they are picking up with a show of fingers through the front windshield.

"One of our missions is to make sure we still provide services for our children but we also want to make sure we do so in a way that protects our employees from this pandemic," Butts said.

The school district is providing free meals to all children age 18 and young this week. Schools distributed food Monday morning, and meals will be available from 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday and Friday at the front entrances at Bridgeport Elemtentary (9035 W. Morris St.), Chapelwood Elementary (1129 N. Girls School Road) and Stout Field Elementary (3820 W. Bradbury Ave.).

Children will receive two breakfasts and two lunches Wednesday and one breakfast and one lunch Friday, while supplies last.

The school district will continue using this method at its distributions this week and will make additional changes at the end of the week if needed.
