CARMEL -- This is what you might call a win-win situation during a challenging time for healthcare workers and restaurants.

In Carmel, a program that begins Friday allows residents to donate meals from local restaurants to be delivered to healthcare workers at the Hamilton County city's hospitals.

Healthcare workers will enjoy the meals, while local restaurants will receive the additional business they need to help keep staff employed. The program will provide close to 190 meals each day, which will be divided between St. Vincent Carmel and IU Health North hospitals to support healthcare workers dealing directly with COVID-19 patients.

The City of Carmel and the Rotary Club of Carmel are partnering with the hospitals. Several local restaurants, including Divvy, Donatello’s, Fork + Ale House, Greek Tony’s, Joe’s Next Door, King Cal, Muldoon’s and Woody’s, will participate in the initial launch.

As starter, the program has been funded with $10,000 from the City of Carmel. Donations from the community are being solicited to fund the program for as long as possible.

“We must do all we can to support our health care workers as they battle this deadly virus. Providing healthy meals, which also has a positive economic impact of supporting our local restaurants, is a wonderful way to help our community through this crisis. I appreciate Rotary stepping in to help facilitate this effort and I am grateful that our local restaurants are making adjustments to accommodate this program. We are stronger when we work together and that is what it will take to get through this pandemic,” said Mayor Jim Brainard.
