INDIANAPOLIS — The COVID-19 death toll among staff and offenders at Indiana prisons has reached 22.

New figures from the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC) reflect a recent inmate death at the New Castle Correctional Facility in Henry County.

Across the state, 20 offenders and two IDOC employees have died from confirmed and suspected cases of the virus.

Statewide, 1,303 staffers have been tested for COVID-19, with 320 positive results. 1,725 prisoners have been screened and 700 tests came back positive.

Overall, the number of COVID-19 cases within the prison system has stabilized in recent weeks, following the initial outbreak.

Eight inmates at the Plainfield Correctional Facility have died, along with six at the Westville prison, four at the Pendleton Correctional Facility, and one each at New Castle and the Miami Correctional Facility.

Westville has the most positive tests among prisoners, 180.
