INDIANAPOLIS — The list of summer recreational possibilities in Indiana is growing shorter.

The Department of Natural Resources announced Wednesday that state park swimming pools will not open this summer.

It's not the pools that are the problem. Space limitations on pool decks would make social distancing difficult.

This list of closed state park pools is a long one: Mounds, Prophetstown, Turkey Run, McCormick’s Creek, Spring Mill, Brown County, Versailles, Clifty Falls, O’Bannon Woods, Shakamak and Harmonie, along with the pool at Cagles Mill Lake.

The good news is that most state park beaches have enough room for people to spread out and practice social distancing on the sand or grassy areas.

Beaches are located at these parks and state recreation areas: Pokagon, Potato Creek, Chain O’Lakes, Indiana Dunes, Ouabache, Lincoln, Whitewater Memorial, Summit Lake, Cecil M. Harden, Mississinewa, Monroe, Patoka, Brookville, Hardy Lakes, Deam Lake, Starve Hollow and Ferdinand State Forest.

The beaches at Cagles Mill and Salamonie Lake will reopen when the current high water returns to safe levels.
