INDIANAPOLIS – As some states across the country see record-high COVID-19 cases, Indiana’s number of cases has continued to slowly decline.

Gov. Eric Holcomb and Indiana State Health Commissioner Dr. Kristina box stressed Wednesday how Hoosiers shouldn’t get complacent with the latest good results.

“We’ve seen some alarming increases in COVID-19 cases around the country recently as people start gathering again without any social distancing or masks,” Box said.

Seven states - Arizona, Arkansas, California, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas - all reported record-high Coronavirus cases this week.

A recent study showed that as many as 43% of Hoosiers infected with COVID-19 had no symptoms at the time.

“You may be sick and never know it,” Box said. “Just because you don’t have symptoms doesn’t mean that someone else can’t get sick.”

She said it is often younger people who don’t follow social distancing and mask-wearing guidelines. The concern isn’t quite as strong for the younger people, but it’s for the people who could get it from the careless.

“They don’t social distance as well,” she said. “They go to the bars, they go to the clubs together. They may not be wearing their masks, or if they do wear them early in the evening they come off later in the evening. And it’s not really what’s going to happen to them, necessarily. It’s the individuals who are going to take the infection home to that’s going to be an issue going forward. They may put other people in the hospital with mom or dad, or grandma or grandpa.”
