NOBLESVILLE — The Humane Society for Hamilton County announced Friday it is closing to the public and discontinuing adoptions as a preventative measure due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Rebecca Stevens, president and CEO of the Humane Society for Hamilton County, said in a news release the organization will continue accepting lost, stray and unwanted animals from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
People who are surrendering an animal, bringing in a stray or looking for a lost pet should all ahead at 317-773-4974.
"These proactive measures are being taken in an effort to keep our staff, volunteers, and customers safe, follow the recommendations of public health officials, and focus our team and resources to maximize our lifesaving impact," Stevens said.
The organization said it is having to do extra work in response to the virus, and it is already feeling the financial impact. People can make a donation or contribute supplies by viewing the Humane Society for Hamilton County's wish list.
Stevens encouraged people to create an emergency plan for their pets, which includes making sure they are wearing identification and have crates, extra supplies and food. Pet owners should also identify a caregiver who can help take care of their pet if they become ill.
