INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana restaurant industry could lose as much as $920 million in sales this month because of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Indiana Restaurant and Lodging Association.

Since February, an estimated 200,000 Hoosier restaurant employees have been laid off, 83% of the total employees just two months ago.

The Indiana Restaurant and Lodging Association also reports 98% of survey takers in Indiana reporting a decrease in sales.

Perhaps most depressingly, 2% of survey takers said they’ve permanently closed, with another 4% saying they will likely have to close permanently because of the pandemic.

The data comes from the National Restaurant Association, which conducted a survey of more than 6,500 restaurant operators.
