TERRE HAUTE — A federal prisoner at the United States Penitentiary Terre Haute died Sunday after complaining to prison staff about chest pains and shortness of breath.
According to a report from the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Gregory Phinton Glenn, 56, reported the chest pains and shortness of breath to prison officials on Sunday. He was taken first to the Health Services department at the prison and then to a local hospital for treatment.
Glenn was pronounced dead at the hospital after going into cardiac arrest, the Federal Bureau of Prisons said in a statement.
Prior to his departure from the prison, Glenn tested positive for COVID-19.
According to the Federal Bureau of Prisons, there have been three confirmed inmate cases of COVID-19 and no confirmed cases among staff at USP Terre Haute.
Glenn was sentenced to 14 months in federal prison from the Southern District of Iowa for a supervised release violation. Glenn's original conviction was for possession with intent to distribute heroin and fentanyl. Glenn had been in custody at USP Terre Haute since April 21.
The Bureau of Prisons has 136,959 federal inmates with 36,000 staff nationwide, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website. There are 1,577 federal inmates who have tested positive for COVID-19 along with 181 Bureau of Prisons staff who have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. As of Tuesday, there have been 64 federal inmates deaths and zero federal prisons staff member deaths from COVID-19.
