INDIANAPOLIS — Hoosiers having a hard time getting food during the coronavirus pandemic could soon have an easier time, thanks to a new program approved by the USDA.

The USDA Food and Nutrition Service approved a Disaster Household Distribution program to use foods from the Emergency Food Assistance Program, administered by the Indiana State Department of Health.

The program allows current food banks to use food pantries to distribute food to families that need it. Priority will be given to Hoosiers who are financially struggling the most, the ISDH said.

About 250 sites, including mobile pantries, will help with food distribution across the state. Households will get one prepackaged 25-pound box with the following foods:

canned and packaged fruits
vegetables
soups
sauces
noodles
beans
nuts
juices
meats
