Number of COVID-19 cases in Indiana tops 3,000, at least 78 Hoosiers have died

INDIANAPOLIS — It's been almost four weeks since the first case of the coronavirus COVID-19 was reported in Indiana and we now have over 3,000 confirmed cases.

More than 75 Hoosiers have also lost their lives to the virus since the first death was reported just over two weeks ago.

As of Thursday, April 2, the Indiana State Department of Health reports 3,039 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 78 deaths.

The number of cases of COVID-19 in Marion County is now over 1,300 with 24 deaths reported.

Human coronaviruses most commonly spread from an infected person to others through:

  • Respiratory droplets released into the air by coughing and sneezing
  • Close personal contact, such as touching or shaking hands
  • Touching an object or surface with the virus on it, then touching your mouth, nose, or eyes before washing your hands
  • Rarely, fecal contamination.

The best way to protect yourself from any respiratory illness, including the flu, is to:

  • Wash your hands often w/ soap & water for at least 20 seconds. If soap & water are not available, use alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact (within 6 feet) with people who are sick.
  • Stay home when you are sick.Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
