9 inmates have died at Indiana prisons from COVID-19

INDIANAPOLIS — Two more inmates at Indiana prisons have died from COVID-19, according to the Indiana Department of Corrections, bringing the total number of inmate deaths up to nine.

The new deaths were reported Thursday at the Pendleton and Westville correctional facilities. Both inmate deaths were confirmed to be from COVID-19 through testing.

A total of nine inmates have died from COVID-19, according to the latest reports from the IDOC and 346 others have tested positive for the virus.

COVID-19 Inmate Deaths at IDOC Facilities:

Miami Correctional Facility

  • 1 presumed

Pendleton Correctional Facility

  • 2 confirmed

Plainfield Correctional Facility

  • 3 confirmed
  • 1 presumed

Westville Correctional Facility

  • 2 confirmed

Two staff members, one at the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility and one at the Indiana Women's Prison have also died from COVID-19.

At least 76 staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 at IDOC facilities across the state.

The IDOC reports that 3,684 offenders are currently in quarantine and an additional 502 inmates are in isolation inside several prisons across the state due to COVID-19.
