Volunteers needed to fill in-person and virtual help through United Way

INDIANAPOLIS — RTV6 is highlighting the ways Hoosiers are working together during the coronavirus pandemic. Many viewers have asked how to get to work helping others in the community. If you are healthy and low risk, RTV6 found opportunities for you to lend a hand.

The United Way of Central Indiana is working closely with local organizations that have an urgent need for volunteers during the coronavirus pandemic.

There are hands on options with food pantries and homeless shelters, as well as others. Plus there are opportunities to help from your home. For instance, telephone reassurance for senior service organizations.

"With the social distancing guidelines, It creates a unique situation,” says Jennifer Hashem of United Way of Central Indiana. “But the idea then being if you can volunteer, and in times like these if you feel in some sort of way to give back, we keep encouraging you to keep looking at our page for updates that will usually have the most updated information in terms of who needs volunteers or not and if you are able to or not because of your unique situation."

The United Way of Central Indiana asks that if you do choose to volunteer to keep social distancing in mind. Also, solo volunteer opportunities like delivering food t someone’s home are just as needed and important as group events. They also ask for you to stay home if you feel sick.
