INDIANAPOLIS — A 27-year-old man has been arrested and charge with murder in the death of Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Officer Breann Leath.

Elliahs Dorsey has been preliminarily charged with murder and attempted murder. The Marion County Prosecutor will make the final decision on what charges will be filed.

IMPD Officer Leath was responding to a domestic incident at an apartment in the 1800 block of Edinburge Square around 3 p.m. Thursday when she was shot. According to IMPD, shots were fired through the structure as Leath and another officer knocked on the suspect's door. Leath and a woman inside the apartment were both shot.

Officers were able to pull Leath from the scene and she was rushed to the hospital where she later died.

Responding officers located the female suffering from gunshot wounds inside the apartment. She was transported to Methodist Hospital. Her condition is not known, but police say she was stable.

Dorsey was taken into custody at the scene without further incident.

“Officer Leath was an example of what an IMPD officer should be. She showed resolve, strength, and compassion in a dangerous job, and was always focused on serving the community she loved. She will be sorely missed,” said IMPD Chief Randal Taylor. “Even while faced with an officer down, our East District officers demonstrated professionalism and courage as they brought her and a resident to safety, de-escalated the scene, and apprehended a dangerous suspect without further incident. I could not be more proud of the actions of Officer Leath and her colleagues on this heavy day.”
