Names of officers involved in fatal shooting of Brownstown man revealed

BROWNSTOWN — The Indiana State Police released the names of two officers involved in the fatal shooting of a Brownstown man on Wednesday morning.

On Thursday, investigators announced that both the Brownstown Police Chief, Tom Hanner, and Assistant Chief, Joe Kelly, were involved in the Wednesday morning shooting.

Chief Hanner has been with the Jackson County Sheriff's Department for 15 years and Assistant Chief Kelly has been with the department for 12 years.

According to ISP, both officers have been placed on administrative leave per department protocol.

Indiana State Police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Wheeles identified the man Wednesday as 53-year-old Barry Rucker of Brownstown and said he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at a hospital in nearby Seymour.

The investigation is ongoing.
