INDIANAPOLIS -- An inmate at the Marion County Arrestee Processing Center badly beat an officer who attempted to intervene in a fight Friday morning.

The fight erupted between 22-year-old Wytwaine Jackson and another inmate around 11:45 a.m. Friday.

According to a probable cause affidavit, when Corporal Brent Smith attempted to break up the fight, Jackson turned on him, striking him repeatedly in the head until other officers were able to subdue him.

Smith suffered a displaced nasal bone, concussion, multiple bruises and lacerations to his head, face and mouth in the attack.

Jail records show Jackson was arrested in April on multiple charges, including theft, criminal trespass and robbery resulting in bodily injury.

He faces new charges of aggravated battery and battery resulting in bodily injury to a public safety officer in connection with Friday’s alleged attack.
