HENDRICKS COUNTY — The mother of a child at a Hendricks County elementary school is upset that her daughter's class isn't celebrating Valentine's Day like the rest of the school.

Instead, the class at North Salem Elementary School, part of the North West Hendricks School Corp., said one first grade class is celebrating "A Day of Kindness."

The emphasis of the day is to treat each other with kindness and understanding, school officials said.

Ashley Land, who has a child at the school, said it isn't fair because others get to celebrate Valentine's Day.

"I just feel like they're too young to have to change the routine in a way that they're used to because of one child in their class not celebrating holidays," Land said. "There is another first grade class that gets to do these things. They get to have the parties, they get to make the Valentine's boxes, pass the valentines out, play games, have music and do all the fun things, and this first grade class doesn't get to."

School officials said the teacher will pair the "Day of Kindness" with a children's book promoting acts of kindness and will have a fun activity, food and music.

According to an email from the teacher telling parents about the plans for the day, Valentine's Day cards will be collected and held onto until the end of the day when they will be given to the children to open at home.
